    Hello friends, I have 2 questions: 1/ Why should we make a demand plan for the product family instead of each SKU?, what are the benefits?. 2/ How will product family be understood?. Thank you. Note: My company has 200 SKUs belonging to 3 brands.

    Hi Rick, first of all thank you very much for all your videos, they have been very useful to understand the optimization models in RM. I have a question related to the EMSR implementation in Virtual Nesting. Once you have the proteccion levels for each buckets doing EMSR, what do they represent and how do you interpretate those as Bid Prices in the Network.

    Thank you for the great videos Rick! For Fare2, should we be looking for a theta that results in value >= 125? In that case shouldn't it be 52 (which results in 126.64) instead of 52.25 (which results in 124.21)?

    Great video and looking forward to the next ones. Perhaps this will come up but how do you eliminate the bias from using past data to predict future trends? E.g. you sold 20 Y fares last year in March at $500 but how do you know you cannot sell 30 Y fares this year at $500?

    Thank you for sharing these excellent videos. Is there one demand curve per flight or per fare please? I am thinking price elasticities for Y fares (business type customer) may be different to lower fares (leisure). Also you state price discrimination is different prices for the same product. Why is a flexible seat ticket, where the airline needs to provide additional services to allow changes to the ticket, not seen as a different product compared to a restricted seat ticket?

    thanks for the video Rick. is it fair to say that most of airlines and hotels have a sugestion of overbookings, forecast from a system or what to do with inventory closing fares etc? in my case I look at booking curves in a time series and try to predict doing interpretation myself just as you mentioned on video using past data and adding seasonalities and talking to commercial teams to see new trends. I see it difficult as I know I am not capable of identifying things that a mathematician would add to a program but I do the best I can. I just wondering where I am in a timeline compared to an airline, whether I am still in the 80's.

    • @RickZeniRMVideos
      @RickZeniRMVideos 7 лет назад

      Hi Gabriel, I've seen small airlines with no formal RM system do well managing revenue. Some choose to analyse the data and make decisions manually. There is no reason this can't be effective since an analyst knows more about a market than a computer does. The big advantage of a system is that it can manage many flights very quickly. If you don't have a big operation, you may not need more than you currently have. Rick

      The expected value of the High Fare must be included in the calculation.

    I have a question about elasticity: You say that if the price goes up with 10% and quantity goes down with 10% revenue stays the same. Imagine price being 100 and quantity being 10, with revenue being 1000. After % in/decreases you will get price 110 and quantity 9, which gives a revenue of 990. So how should I interpret it?

    • @RickZeniRMVideos
      @RickZeniRMVideos 7 лет назад

      Rico, This is a very good question and a keen observation. The 10% example is an approximation to make the math easier and works well only for small price changes. For example, if the price increases 1% and demand decreases 1%, $101*9.9=$999.9 which is close enough to $1000. On the other hand if the price increases 100% to $200 and demand decreases 100% to 0, the approximation would not be useful. The exact formula is the percent demand decrease =1 - (the old price/the new price). In our example, if price increases to $110, the percent demand decreases by 1-($100/$110)=9.091% to 10-.9091=9.091. $110*9.091=$1000. Another example is price increases to $200, demand decreases 10/200

    Hi Rick, thanks for making those RM series videos and it has been really helpful and enjoyable to watch. In OD inventory control, I keep hearing hurdle rate and displacement cost, could you clarify the difference between them? If you could share examples on how they are calculated and applied, that would be great. Thanks a lot!

    • @RickZeniRMVideos
      @RickZeniRMVideos 7 лет назад

      The hurdle rate is just another term used for displacement cost or bid price. They are the same but used in different contexts. For example, removing a seat from inventory would "displace" a $X of revenue. If someone wanted to purchase that seat they would need to pay at least $X, the hurdle rate.

    Hi Rick. How do you define the remaining demand in revenue management?

    • @RickZeniRMVideos
      @RickZeniRMVideos 8 лет назад

      Remaining demand is the demand that has not yet arrived at a given point in time. For example, the total demand for a flight might be 100 passengers. At 30 days prior to departure the remaining demand might be 55.

    • @paritoshagarwal19

    How do you distribute OD demand to related itineraries? Do you have any video that can throw some light on this?

    • @RickZeniRMVideos
      @RickZeniRMVideos 8 лет назад

      +paritosh agarwal I don't have any videos on that specific topic, but there are generally two methods: 1) Forecast demand directly at the OD level. This is difficult due to small numbers. 2) Forecast at some higher level and disaggregate the demand based on some factor. For example, you could forecast at the leg/fare class level and allocate demand to the OD flow based on historical bookings for those itineraries.

  • @gabrieldantas84
    @gabrieldantas84 8 лет назад

    Hi Professor, in order to maximize even more. 1) If JFK - MIA does not go through the buckets, could someone just raise the Y fear to 350, or 400 ? 2) if there is demand for intenarary LAX to JFK final destination and BOS to JFK final destination, should we raise buckets just for those origin and keep JFK to MIA lower, eg. last seat from LAX to JFK final destination pay even lower USD 300 and another passenger pays lower on last seat from JFK to MIA pays USD 300, with those 2 passengers doing double dip we make USD 600 with two passengers doing short intineraries, intead of 1 passenger using both flights making USD 400.

    • @RickZeniRMVideos
      @RickZeniRMVideos 8 лет назад

      +Gabriel Dantas It all depends on the demand and elasticity. If the demand supports a higher fare it should probably be raised. Virtual nesting will not always find a solution as good as a true O&D model, so it is possible that you can find solutions on your own that VN doesn't find due to the limitation of the number of buckets and the static mapping. Rick
